Harrogate College Academy VS Huddersfield New College

The first match of the season for our College football partnership team with Harrogate Town took place at home on Wednesday 30th September at The Ings in Wetherby.

Huddersfield New College- 5 – 1- Harrogate College Academy

The sun was beating down as though the day was plucked from summer and the distinctive yellow and black striped team kits shone on the pitch.

With a 1pm kick off, the team had the morning to prepare themselves mentally and physically for what proved to be an intense first match against Huddersfield New College Men’s 2.

One goal down at the interval and a flurry of substitutions changed the shape of the side and probably altered the many partnerships that were starting to develop in the first 45 minutes, with both sides creating opportunities to score.

“We have shown glimpses in the first half of what we can achieve but we now need to be able to sustain that level of performance for the whole ninety minutes.”- Mike Bligh, Harrogate Town team development coach.

Gaps appeared more freely which gave Huddersfield all the room they required to make the result safe after only 15 minutes of second half played by racing into a three goal lead. Harrogate started to exert some pressure in the Huddersfield penalty area which saw Jordan Prideaux fire home through a crowded box to register the first goal in our new partnership to reduce the score line to three goals to one.

Two minutes later and some positive work by the Bruno Wray produced a fine save to deny a second goal from Harrogate and make the tie interesting.

A second Harrogate goal wasn’t to be with a more dominant Huddersfield team running out comfortable and deserved winners by five goals to one.

“The lads effort cannot be questioned as they all worked very hard and showed great attitude towards the game even when things were hard. We have a lot to learn and playing games together will improve that over the next few weeks with all players getting the opportunity to show why they should be in the side. Training restarts on Thursday morning with us all reflected on the game and feedback our collective thoughts before getting back out on the training pitch.” – Mike Bligh, Harrogate Town team development coach.

“Lots of positives for the first match of the season and the score-line doesn’t reflect the effort levels of the team, who put in some hard work.  We can only get stronger and stronger as the season unfolds and the same can be said for the partnership between the college and Harrogate Town AFC.”- Andy Reah, Sport tutor at Harrogate College.

Harrogate Town First Team Manager Simon Weaver was supporting alongside team development coach Mike Bligh. Stray FM were also present, interviewing the players on their experience so far working with Harrogate Town. Some of the luckier spectators were also interviewed!
