Progression & Employability student faces challenge

Harrogate College Progression and Employability student Tom Oates has made this week made headlines as he geared up to complete the Melmerby 10k on Sunday 29 May 2016.

Tom, who is visually impaired and has a number of other disabilities, challenged himself to complete the 10k with his mum Emma, to raise money for a MOTOmed movement trainer for Henshaw College’s gym, which would help other students to improve their mobility.

Tom has also completed numerous 5k runs, but this time wants to double that to raise funds for this state of the art machine.

Tom joined Henshaws after leaving school and also studies at Harrogate College three days a week on the Progression and Employability course, which allows students to become independent with their banking and finances and sets them up for employability.

In the future, Tom wants to go into a career in care, providing support to people in a heritage setting.
