Harrogate College’s Uniformed Public Services students visited RAF Leeming on Tuesday 18th October to attend a ‘No ordinary job’ event; an initiative specifically aimed at students who may be considering a career in the Armed Forces and or any students who would simply like to find out more about what the RAF does and has to offer.
The focus of the event was around three main areas of employment (Trade groups) in the Royal Air Force:
- Information Communication Technology Technician
- Logistics (including Driver, Chef, Catering, Storage/Distribution, Movements)
- RAF Regiment Gunner
The event started at 10am and concluded at 3pm, with students having the opportunity to speak with RAF personnel from the above Trade groups and also discuss careers with Recruiting staff. During the visit the students also got a ‘windshield tour’ of the base, so they could appreciate the size of a working RAF station and the difficulties with securing one, especially when the airfield perimeter covers a distance of 11 miles. They also got to see an accommodation block and the sports and fitness facilities available to personnel and families. Finally, they also got a free hot lunch in the Junior Ranks Mess (JRM) and picked up a goody bag at the end of the day.
“It was a great event, very well organised and executed, and one which opened many students eyes to the possibility of not only a career in the Armed Forces but a career in the Royal Air Force which was exactly the purpose of the day.”- Helen Garnham, UPS Course tutor.
