Harrogate College Fine Art student Wendy Barrington has had her artwork showcased at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull after entering an open competition that called for submissions from professional and amateur artists, back in October.
Wendy, who is now in the third year of her Fine Art degree at Harrogate College, was encouraged to enter the competition by course tutor Adam King, with her sculpture titled ‘Acceptance – One race’ which looks at acceptance and identity. The sculpture, which uses a variety of coloured clay fired at different temperatures creates a representation that we’re all the same, made from the same mould.
The competition for the Ferens Art Gallery is now in its 50th year, with the gallery reopening following a £5.1m refurbishment to celebrate the start of the UK City of Culture 2017. Wendy’s entry was whittled down from thousands to one of just 300 selected by highly respected judges Dr Gabriele Finaldi, director of the National Gallery, the Hull born actress Maureen Lipman CBE and the internationally renowned sculptor and Royal Academician David Mach.
BSB Architecture in London then poured over the student entrants and selected a winner; Wendy Barrington ‘Acceptance – One Race’. Wendy won £150 prize money and her artwork is now being showcased in the Ferens Art Gallery.
When asked of the Preview Show she was invited to, to view her work on display, Wendy said:
“I was on my way to the preview show at the Ferens Art Gallery to take a look at the exhibition when I got a phone call announcing that I’d won! I hadn’t even expected to make it through the first round, let alone win so it feels amazing.”
“I chose to study my degree in Fine Art because I’ve always been creative and I wanted to further develop my skills and challenge myself by returning to education. Harrogate College has fantastic resources and facilities, as well as extremely knowledgeable tutors and technicians who are experts in their fields.”
